My blog for today will be from the reading of Hills Like White Elephants (Ernest Hemingway. It is about the relationship between a couple that seem to be going in different directions. Can they stay together, even with their different outlooks? Some times choices like what i had to make are hard. I believe that ultimately it was the guy's choice to keep the relationship going. Even through her stubbornness of being herself. As far as going through the motions of being in the relationship. The contradictions of everything he said was very evident. In her eyes he couldn't see what she was seeing. For an example: in the beginning she had stated that the mountains looked like white elephants to her. The guy responded by saying he never saw one. But she was short with him and ignored what else he had to say by bringing up another topic all together. In my reading I thought the guy was more complexed on the relationship because he cared enough about her to stay as long as he did. He had left for a moment and took a time out for himself. He gathered his thoughts and looked around and saw everyone in the train station was waiting for the train with any problems. So I feel like he thought "we can do it,too". When he looked at her and she smiled back at him. Is when decided to go back, after he had finished a beer of course. When he went to the table and ask her how she was doing. Her response to him was like "here we again". When have you made a important choice to stay in a relationship or leave a relationship -- OR -- stay or leave a difficult situation? It’s sunny with the breeze coming in through the window, hitting his hand. It’s a normal summer day with emotions running angry. She screams “David, you are my son, I feel like I gave birth to you. I am your MOTHER!” Just a blank stare out the window. Anger building up inside, clinching of hands into fists, turning red from being held so tightly. “You are not my real MOTHER!” Deep in despair from the flashback of the long black hair, the smile, the touch of the gentle rough hands on his shoulders to the “Siempre sere tu madre, mi hijo” and the response “Siempre sere tu hijo, Mama”. He would never forget those last words spoken at 5 years old. The world closing on him only the memories of the past was left. The anger started to go away remembering the times being held by her, the one he truly missed with all his little heart.
